Microsoft Workstation Service Vulnerability
Overview: A new vulnerability in the Microsoft Workstation Service has been recently discovered. The vulnerability allows an attacker run arbitrary code or to access the target system. Working exploit programs are known to exist. Zone Labs products prevent this vulnerability from being exploited from un-trusted networks by default.

Impact: By exploiting the vulnerability, remote attackers are able to compromise the entire system. Known exploit programs are designed to provide command line access to the target system. It may be possible for a worm or Trojan horse program to infect a machine via this vulnerability.
Description: A security vulnerability exists in the Workstation service that could allow remote code execution on an affected system. This vulnerability results because of an unchecked buffer in the Workstation service.
Working exploit programs are known to exist are easily available. It is believed that this vulnerability is being actively exploited.
Affected Software: The following Microsoft Windows versions are vulnerable to this issue:
- Microsoft Windows 2000
- Microsoft Windows XP
Zone Labs Products: All computers employing ZoneAlarm® Pro, ZoneAlarm Plus, and ZoneAlarm security products prevent these vulnerabilities from being exploited from un-trusted networks by default.
Recommended Actions: Install any Zone Labs firewall product and ensure that the Security Setting is set to Medium (the default setting) or High. Zone Labs products, by default, prevent connections from un-trusted networks to the ports used to exploit the Workstation service vulnerability.
